Alexei Lubimov, Russian pianist born in Moscow, is considered as one of the most original performers in the contemporary music scene. Thanks to his broad repertoire, he is counted among today’s most appreciated pianists. Studying with Heinrich Neuhaus, Lubimov developed an early passion for both the baroque music, especially the one played on original instruments, and XX century composers, such as Schönberg, Webern, Stockhausen, Boulez, Ives, Ligeti, Schnittke, Gubaidulina, Silvestrov e Pärt. He performed for the first time some contemporary compositions in Russia, and founded the festival “Alternativa.” During the ‘70s, when his international career has been slowed down due to the known political restrictions, Lubimov constituted a baroque music quartet. Playing both antique and baroque music did not draw his attention away from the classical repertoire, of which he is still an important interpreter, as witnessed by many recordings. In the ‘80s, as the restrictions were lifted, he started a brilliant career, with concerts in Europe, the United States, and Japan. He also performed with important orchestras, such as the Royal Philharmonic of Londra, the Orchestra Nazionale Russa, the Orchestra Filarmonica di Radio France, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsches Symphonieorchester of Berlino, the Orchestras Filarmoniche of Monaco and Pietroburgo, the orchestras di Israel, Los Angeles e Helsinki under the lead of conductors like Ashkenazy, Järvi, Kondrashin, Hogwood, Mackerras, Norrington, Pletnev, Saraste, Salonen, Janovski, and Tortelier. Examples of iconic performances include concerts with the Age of Enlightenment Orchestra, the Wiener Akademie, the Collegium Vocale Gent. Alex Lubimov also focused his attention on chamber music, regularly performing with internationally renowned soloists, and participating to the most prestigious festivals all over the world, such as the ones of Salzburg and Copenhagen, in 2003. In 2004/2005, he performed with the orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (Beethoven), with the Munich Philharmonic (Silvestrov), the SWR Stuttgart (Pärt), the DSO Berlin (Pärt), the Danish National Symphony Orchestra (Pärt), the Anima Eterna Brugge and the RNO Moscow. He also made many recordings with Melodia, Erato, BIS, and Sony. Among these, we can find the complete sonatas of Mozart, Schubert, Chopin, Beethoven, and Brahms, beside some XX century music. His most recent CD, Der Bote, edited in 2003 by ECM, received an enthusiastic approval by the specialized critic.
